“I’m a challenge junkie.” That’s always been Jon Miles’ approach to his professional life, and it’s led him to a long and successful career in the insurance industry. “A mentor once told me, ‘Learn. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes.’”
After accepting many challenges in the forms of job offers and the moves associated with them, Jon has found a permanent home at EHD (formerly Engle-Hambright, & Davies) where he’s been working for 19 years. He’s now president and CEO, and he will add the title of Chairman in 2017.
He grew up in Ellwood City, PA, which is about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and the birthplace of Hack Wilson, baseball’s single season RBI leader. “I’m the oldest of 6, and I’m the only one who’s left the area. In 2012, when I told my mother that we were opening an office in Pittsburgh, she thought that I was moving home, and I had to tell her that I wasn’t.”
Jon played basketball in high school before heading off to the frozen tundra of Erie, where he attended Gannon University and majored in Psychology. “I use it every day.” He also had a business minor, and in his first job out of college, he worked as a drug and alcohol counselor. When that line of work didn’t prove to be his life’s calling, he took a job with Keebler, and since he was too tall to be the Keebler Elf, “I started out selling cookies.”
