Gene Barr grew up in the Philadelphia area (Chester). After graduating high school, he attended St. Joe’s College in Philadelphia and obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science. “St. Joe’s is now a university, so that may give away my age,” he laughed.
“When I was 10 years old, I wanted to be a lawyer—a criminal prosecutor to be more specific. But after taking a political ideals class in high school, that changed.” As a freshman in college, Gene began working the polls for elections. “When I was a senior and elected onto Borough Council—that more than peaked my interest into politics.”
He was elected to borough council while in college, becoming the youngest elected official in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. “I was initially appointed to the position to fill a vacancy in 1977 when I was 21 and a senior in college. I ran and was elected to council in November of 1977.”
He’s also a published author who recently returned from his promotional book tour for “The Civil War Captain and His Lady” … a true “Cold Mountain” from the Northern perspective. “Some people have said it can be compared to the movie ‘The Notebook’ but set in the Civil War era.” The book tour lasted 1 week and was in Central Illinois.
