When it comes to defining success, Mark Snyder says it boils down to having good people come together to form an even better team. And hard work and leadership development are 2 keys to refining that team, says Snyder, the president and CEO of Pennsy Supply Inc.
For nearly 100 years, the Harrisburg-based company has provided construction supplies for infrastructure projects across the region. Today, it operates 15 asphalt plants, 12 aggregate stone quarries, 3 sand sites, and 6 ready-mix concrete plants, as well as providing paving services directly.
It’s no surprise that one of the few decorations in the executive office of Snyder’s Anneville office is an iconic black and white photo of pro football player Forrest Gregg, one of Vince Lombardi’s favorite trench warriors from the famed ‘60s Green Bay Packers. Caked in mud and yelling encouragement to his teammates, Gregg’s “mudhead” photo is famous for its depiction of the Hall of Fame tackle’s grit, which enabled him to play a then-record 188 consecutive games over 16 seasons.
“We do a tremendous amount of leadership development here, right down to our front-line foreman,” Snyder says. “Sometimes your best employees are the most difficult to manage, and that’s just true—how do you harness that and take the edges off and turn them into leaders.”
